Resi Apriani Hergita Candra Dwi Riwayat Susiana Yuniarto Wiryo Nugroho Copyright (c) 2026 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-07-22 2026-07-22 13 2 57 68 STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING ENGLISH AND MANDARIN VOCABULARY AMONG JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS http://jurnal.ikipwidyadarmasurabaya.ac.id/index.php/widyaloka/article/view/338
Vocabulary is a fundamental component of foreign language learning because it supports learners' ability to understand, produce, and negotiate meaning in communication. This study aims to identify junior high school students' difficulties in learning English and Mandarin vocabulary, compare their vocabulary achievement in both languages, and determine which language is more challenging for students. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and a questionnaire distributed online to 28 junior high school students. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and mean score. The findings show that students achieved a higher mean score in English vocabulary (9.96 out of 10) than in Mandarin vocabulary (8.86 out of 10). The result indicates that Mandarin vocabulary is relatively more challenging because students need to recognize Hanzi, understand tonal pronunciation, and memorize unfamiliar orthographic forms. The study suggests that teachers should combine repetition, contextualized practice, visual character support, and interactive vocabulary activities to improve students' vocabulary mastery in both English and Mandarin.

Erwin Lijaya Amiatun Nuryana Copyright (c) 2026 Erwin Lijaya, Amiatun Nuryana https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-07-22 2026-07-22 13 2 69 76 LANGUAGE POLICY IN THE LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE OF A WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITY: A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA http://jurnal.ikipwidyadarmasurabaya.ac.id/index.php/widyaloka/article/view/342
Linguistic Landscape (LL) studies investigate the use of language on public signage as a reflection of identity, language policy, and power dynamics within a community. Despite the ongoing expansion of LL research in Indonesia, investigations into the linguistic landscape within "World-Class Universities" remain scarce. This study seeks to examine language utilization and sign classifications within the linguistic environment of Universitas Airlangga. A qualitative descriptive methodology was utilized, incorporating observational and documentation approaches. A total of 510 linguistic signs were gathered from the public spaces of Universitas Airlangga's Campuses A, B, and C, and were subsequently analysed according to language type and sign category. The findings reveal that the university's linguistic environment is mostly characterized by monolingual Indonesian signs (74.9%), followed by bilingual Indonesian-English signs (17.9%) and monolingual English signs (7.2%); no multilingual signs were identified. In terms of classification, building name signs constituted the largest share at 55.5%, followed by prohibition and order signs at 20.6%, informative signs at 12.7%, directional signs at 10.8%, and slogans at 0.4%. The findings indicate that the prevalence of Indonesian signifies the implementation of the national language policy, whilst the use of English reflects Universitas Airlangga's global orientation as a World-Class University. This study advances the field of Linguistic Landscape research in the context of higher education in Indonesia.
Siti Ramlah Copyright (c) 2026 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-07-22 2026-07-22 13 2 77 100 INNOVATIVE APPROACHES IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS: A LITERATURE REVIEW http://jurnal.ikipwidyadarmasurabaya.ac.id/index.php/widyaloka/article/view/343
This literature review examines the impact of innovative learning methods on teaching English to young learners. In many educational environments, conventional teaching approaches are often less effective in maintaining students’ interest and active participation. Therefore, more creative and interactive teaching strategies are needed to support meaningful learning experiences. This study applies a literature review approach by examining various academic sources, including journal articles, books, and previous studies related to innovative teaching practices in English language instruction. The review focuses on several approaches, including game-based learning, technology-assisted learning, and collaborative learning. The analysis reveals that innovative teaching methods positively influence students’ motivation, participation, and understanding of English. These approaches encourage learners to become more active in classroom activities while creating a more enjoyable and supportive learning atmosphere. In summary, innovative learning methods contribute significantly to improving the quality of English teaching for young learners. Teachers are encouraged to adopt these approaches to create effective, engaging, and student-centered learning environments.
Yudiana Amiatun Nuryana Copyright (c) 2026 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-07-22 2026-07-22 13 2 101 109 IN HARMONIA SCIENTIA: BALANCING DIGITAL PEDAGOGIES AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FOR PUPIL MOTIVATION IN AN INDONESIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL http://jurnal.ikipwidyadarmasurabaya.ac.id/index.php/widyaloka/article/view/344
This case study explores how SD Kusuma Bangsa in Palembang integrated innovative pedagogical strategies to sustain pupil motivation during curriculum reform. Using a mixed-method design, data were drawn from institutional records, classroom observations, and surveys of students, teachers, and parents. Findings reveal that interactive digital applications, structured physical education, disciplined device management, and home-school collaboration improved participation, literacy, and attendance. These practices were embedded in the Kurikulum Satuan Pendidikan (KSP) 2025/2026, aligning with the Profil Pelajar Pancasila. Grounded in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Self-Determination Theory, the study illustrates how autonomy, competence, and relatedness were fostered through digital exploration, structured skill-building, and collaborative practices. While promising, the findings reflect a single well-resourced institution; future research should extend this model to diverse contexts to test broader applicability.
Mery Gunawan Amiatun Nuryana Copyright (c) 2026 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-07-22 2026-07-22 13 2 110 121
